Disney’s The Lion King Announces Royal Return to Broadway

The Lion King, the Tony award winning musical based on the hit Disney movie of the same name, is officially returning to Midtown Manhattan’s Minskoff Theatre on Sept. 14. This comes immediately on the heels of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s announcement that theatres can seat at full capacity that Tuesday. Tickets are currently on sale.

The musical first debuted just three years after the 1994 animated film, which proved to be one of Disney’s biggest hits. The story follows a young lion cub named Simba, who must reclaim the throne in the wake of his father’s murder.  Though not casting has been announced for this comeback, the show previously featured Bradley Gibson as Simba, Steven Taylor as King Mufasa, Adrienne Walker as love interest Nala, and Stephen Carlile as the treacherous Scar.

The musical has long been lauded for its innovative set designs and remarkable stage show, so it is no doubt going to see a triumphant return come September. Among the many contributors are Elton John, who composed the musical numbers, and Tim Rice, who wrote the lyrics. In its 20-plus years, The Lion King has taken home six Tony Awards, including the prize for “Best Musical.”
